Portland General Electric contracted with MJ Hughes Construction to create a small spillway alongside its penstock between Harriet Dam and Harriet’s powerhouse. The intent of the spillway is to better regulate water flows between the dam and the tailrace and will power a 1mw generator in the future.
This construction site was extremely remote and access was exceptionally difficult. Access is essentially limited to foot traffic only with narrow trails under two feet wide and near vertical areas. All excavation and rock drilling for grouted anchors had to be performed with hand tools. Concrete had to be line pumped through over 400 feet of system with roughly 150 feet of elevation drop.
